How To Make A Denim Feather
Upcycle old jeans into the sweetest gift box decor, clothing embellishment, or place card holder for your holiday table with this cowgirl chic denim feather craft.
Denim Feathers
20-30 feathers depending on size of jeans and feathers
What you need:
1 pair of old jeans (100% cotton works best, but some elasticity is fine)
Scissors
Tweezers (optional)
What to do:
1. Cut your feathers: Make a 1inch cut into your jeans and begin to pull away the fraying edges to determine which direction the weave is going. You will need to adjust the direction of your cut to go WITH the line the fray so that as you pull, “feathery” pieces are left perpendicular to the pulled line. Once you’ve found your direction, Cut out rectangles roughly 7 inches long by 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. Don’t be too precise! They can be any length you want. Cut the corners to give the feathers a point at the top and bottom. To get feathers of different colors, cut some pieces perpendicular to your original set.
2. Pluck the feathers: Using ample patience, and maybe a set of tweezers, begin to pluck away the pieces from the long side until you reach the center, leaving several center strands, switch sides and repeat.
To use: Tie these to anything and everything to add a smile to your day! Decorate gift boxes, make a garland, decorate your tree!
Pro Tip: Do not wash your feathers! Learn from our mistakes. They do not get cute and fluffy when you wash them.
