Taking care of hands and feet during the Winter

Cold temperatures, lack of humidity, and exposure to the elements outdoors can wreak havoc on your skin, but warm, dry air indoors can contribute to the damage, too. These conditions can leave your skin dry, chapped, irritated, or even cracked (ouch!).

Give your hands a hand

Winter means extra hand-washing to keep cold and flu germs at bay. Unfortunately, the more you wash your hands, the drier they can get, especially if you’re using hot water, which strips skin of its natural oils very quickly. It’s tempting to run your cold hands under some really hot water, but use warm water instead.

Another thing people do in the Winter to avoid getting sick is to pump up the hand sanitizer. This antiseptic is convenient, especially when there’s no running water around. However, hand sanitizers are primarily made up of alcohol, which acts as an antimicrobial agent. Alcohol dries the skin significantly. When used frequently, hand sanitizers can cause over-drying, irritation, and sometimes even rashes. Furthermore, the alcohol evaporates quickly, which contributes to the drying effect it has on skin.

In addition to avoiding hand sanitizers, limit use of harsh cleansers and bar soaps, which also can be drying. Instead, try our Honey Hand Soap made with skin-softening pure honey.

Honey is a gentle but highly effective cleanser. When honey comes in contact with skin’s high pH and sodium levels the glucose oxidase in honey is activated and it begins to break down the glucose, releasing the antiseptic hydrogen peroxide. Honey also is an intense softening agent, so you can wash away germs without damaging your skin. In addition to its ultra-hydrating properties, honey contains the sugars glucose and fructose, natural alpha-hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate to help slough of dead skin cells and work to leave the skin smooth and even in tone.

INSIDER INFO: Our Honey Hand Soaps will be back in stock very soon, and they will have a sweet new look! We’ll also be introducing a hand soap in one of our most popular fragrances, so be on the lookout.

Hands that must endure repeated washing to stave off germs can use some extra care. Our Organic Beeswax Salve delivers the ultimate hydration for the driest of skin. It penetrates quickly to moisturize and condition with a blend of pure beeswax, vitamin E, and olive oil. The fresh mint fragrance revitalizes as it soaks deep into skin.

Keep our Beeswax Hand Cream by the sink and apply directly after washing. The rich and creamy texture soothes dry, damaged hands. We add softening pecan and peach kernel oils, anti-oxidizing blueberry extract, and bacteria fighting propolis.

The royal jelly in our had cream improves skin elasticity, which ultimately helps protect skin’s natural moisture barriers from dehydration and inflammation. Beeswax provides essential fatty acids, vitamins, and protective properties. As a natural humectant, it draws moisture from the air and locks it into skin to help keep it hydrated over time. The conditioning properties of beeswax help to nourish the skin while providing a protective barrier.

Don't forget your feet

Your hands are exposed to the elements on the regular and are particularly at risk, but even your feet need some extra care this time of year.

We don’t typically spend much time on our feet during the Winter because, well, nobody sees them, but that is a mistake. Those trotters have been cooped up 24/7 in wool socks, all forms of boots, slippers, and possibly even ice skates, resulting in bacterial buildup, corns, and calluses. Maybe you’re one of those people who insist on walking around in flip-flops or bare feet all year. This can result in severe dryness, scaly soles, and cracked heels, leaving feet susceptible to bacteria, which can develop into infection. Bacteria is also what causes smelly feet.

All these foot issues can take some time to recover from so don’t wait until that first week of warm temps to try and fix months of mistreatment. The last thing you want is to kick off your sneaks for a little breather only to reveal your snagglefeet.

Beeswax Heel Balm is a quick and easy way to keep up with Winter foot maintenance. The emollient formula penetrates even the roughest skin to instantly offer softening relief. The wide-mouth applicator is designed and tested for easy use on heels, ankles, and feet. In addition to the hydrating and softening properties of beeswax, the propolis in our Beeswax Heel Balm is effective is helping to protect against bacteria. Plus, the tangerine and spearmint scent is refreshing and invigorating – a real treat for those fatigued feet.
