We are now in what’s referred to as the “dead of Winter.” Dead, as in this weather is just dead wrong. Outside, it’s cold and dry. Inside, it’s warm and dry. Guess where that leaves your skin? Dry, chapped, irritated, cracked, dull … dead. Your face and lips are particularly at risk because they are exposed to the elements the most.
With some simple modifications to your skincare routine, you can survive the dead of Winter and put your best face forward in 2019.
Let’s start with cleansing. Just like you transition your wardrobe between seasons, so should you transition your face care. What works for you in the Summer does not necessarily work in the Winter.
Use a gentle, moisturizing cleanser and warm rather than hot water. Hot water strips skin of its natural oils leaving it dry and fragile. Did you know both our Honey Hand Soaps and our Honey Body Washes double as everyday face cleansers? Both contain honey, which is a highly effective cleanser and an intense softening agent. Honey contains natural alpha-hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate the skin to leave it smooth and even in tone. This is a perfect alternative to manual and chemical exfoliants to rid your face of Winter dullness.
HIVE HACK: Our Royal Jelly Body Butter also can be used as a face wash! (We prefer the Chamomile & Myrrh for this.) Splash some water on your face, apply a thin layer of your favorite Body Butter, then remove with a cotton round. It removes dirt and makeup and leaves skin soft and moisturized. Royal jelly improves skin elasticity ultimately helping protect skin’s own natural moisture barriers from dehydration and inflammation.
A good moisturizer is vital to helping the delicate skin of your lips and face survive Winter’s cold, harsh weather. Exposure to cold Winter wind causes your skin’s natural oils to be depleted, leading to dryness, redness, and inflammation. This is called windburn, and it usually affects the face. Don’t forget, it is entirely possible to get a sunburn during a cloudy, cold Winter day, too. Snow and ice can reflect up to 80 percent of UV rays.
Sometimes you end up with both windburn and sunburn. (Where my skiers and snowboarders at?) Windburn typically only affects the skin’s outer layer (epidermis) and does not cause long-term damage, unlike sunburn, which penetrates the epidermis to reach the dermis and damages the skin’s proteins and membranes, as well as DNA. Scary. Mom was right: Always wear sunscreen!
Our Organic Beeswax Salve is perfect for rough, dry patches that always seem to crop up during the Winter and are so hard to get rid of. It penetrates quickly to moisturize and condition with a blend of pure beeswax, vitamin E, and olive oil. A little goes a long way. Use it on those wind burned cheeks for some fast-acting TLC.
As mentioned above, avoid manual and/or chemical exfoliation of your face, especially one with windburn or sunburn. Limit or avoid altogether chemical peels, scrubs, sonic brushes, and microdermabrasion. If you’d like to continue an anti-aging regiment during Winter, give your face some special treatment with our White Hibiscus and Royal Jelly Dry Face Mask.
It restores and rejuvenates skin by infusing white hibiscus, baobab, honey, royal jelly, and other active ingredients. White Hibiscus Flower, also called the “botox plant,” is known for its ability to firm and lift skin, while the pulp of baobab fruit is rich in antioxidants and naturally fights signs of aging. What’s more, the patented technology keeps working for 6 to 8 hours after the mask is removed, leaving skin hydrated, radiant, and soft all day long.
Combine a once-per-week mask treatment with a nightly application of our Royal Jelly Night Time Rejuvenation Treatment. It provides transformative hydration from night until morning, working to diminish the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. (Yes, you also can use it as a light daily moisturizer as well!) This formula is power-packed with royal jelly, honey, and propolis. Considered the most precious product of the beehive, royal jelly is a complex blend of lipids, proteins, vitamins, and amino acids. This arsenal of nutrients deeply moisturizes and improves skin elasticity.
Show your lips some love
Finally, don’t forget your lips! Your lips don’t have oil glands, so if you don't take extra good care of them, you’ll be putting that perfect pout in a precarious position. Mom was right again — don't lick your lips! It may give you a split-second of relief but it only makes chapped lips worse. Breathing through your mouth instead of your nose can cause your lips to dry out, too. So if you’re suffering from a cold, make sure you slather on the lip balm even more.
Our Beeswax & Propolis Lip Balm not only conditions the lips but creates a protective layer for that delicate skin. Propolis is high in vitamins A, B1, B2, and B3, and rich in amino acids and antioxidants, making it effective in protecting against bacteria. Beeswax provides essential fatty acids, vitamins, and protective properties. As a base in cosmetics, beeswax will not clog the pores of the skin, still allowing skin to breathe, and helps to ensure an even distribution of ingredients. As a natural humectant, it draws moisture from the air and locks it into skin to help keep it hydrated over time. The conditioning properties of beeswax help to deliver nutrients to the skin while providing a protective shield from the elements.
You should apply about six to eight times during the day, so keep lip balm handy by stashing them all over the place: in your purse, in the car cup holder, in your desk drawer, on your night stand, in your jacket pocket, in your back pack, in the bathroom next to tooth brush, in your pants pocket. Chapped lips don’t stand a chance!
Now you’re ready to face 2019 and kiss Winter goodbye!
