National Honeybee Day Event Schedule

National Honeybee Day is our day at Savannah Bee! It’s an awesome day when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honeybee enthusiasts from across the United States celebrate honeybees and recognize their contribution to humans’ everyday lives as a means of protecting this critical species.

The event was started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who petitioned for and obtained a formal proclamation by the USDA honoring honeybees and beekeeping. In 2010, a non-profit, Pennsylvania Apiculture, Inc. was organized to better facilitate and promote the observance. The original date of observation was August 22, 2009 (the fourth Saturday of August), but has since settled permanently on the third Saturday of August.

By working together and harnessing the efforts that so many already accomplish and by using a unified effort one day a year, the rewards and message is magnified many times over.

Here’s a look at the fun, educational and interactive events we have planned for this special day, across our retail locations! We hope you have a great time!

Wilmington Island Showroom

All Day:

Straight from the Frame Honey Tasting

Taste pure local honey the way it should taste. We will pull a frame of honeycomb straight from the hive early on Saturday morning and deliver it to our Wilmington Island location for you to scoop and enjoy. Taste nature the way it was intended.

11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

Bee Garden Tours with Savannah Bee Founder, Ted Dennard

A Bee Garden Tour at our Wilmington Island location will make for a truly memorable experience…especially when led by our Founder, Ted Dennard.

Tours start in the showroom with our observation beehive. This unique type of hive is housed indoors and is encased in glass, allowing you to see all the amazing activities happening within the hive. One of Savannah Bee Company’s educators will give you a little history about Savannah Bee Company and teach you all about honeybees, beekeeping, and the impact bees have on our everyday lives and the environment.

Then your guide will lead you outside to the bee garden, where you'll get up close and personal with a working beehive to learn about the behaviors and habits of honeybees and the important hive ingredients in our beauty products -- honey, beeswax, propolis and royal jelly. Don't worry -- you will be provided with beekeeper's hat and veil. Honeybees are generally very gentle creatures who mind their own beeswax, but we do want you to feel safe.

Lastly, head back inside for a guided honey tasting during which you can sample and learn about all the different varieties of honey Savannah Bee Company has to offer. Don’t forget to try all our luxurious body care products and peruse all the bee-related extras.

11:30 AM – 2:30 PM

From Bus to your Garden: Simply Potted Mobile Plant Bus Experience

In partnership with Simply Potted Mobile Plant Bus, we’re bringing pollinator-friendly plants to you. During this unique pop-up event, ask questions about planting a bee-friendly garden, get helpful tips and shop for plants that you can take home—right off the bus and into your garden!
