Health Benefits of Honey: Top 10

We all know that honey is good for you, but it can actually extend far beyond simply being healthy.  It is also a natural remedy for a lot of common health issues. Below is a collection of tried and true old fashion remedies, some passed down for generations, that make use of honey to minimize certain ailments and support a naturally healthy life.  Enjoy!

Coughs - Honey is a natural cough suppressant. Two teaspoons of honey 30 minutes before bed has been proven to reduce coughs.

Provide Nutrients - Honey contains small amounts of a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. Using honey instead of sugar provides you with more nutrients for your calories.

Burns – When applied topically to burns honey can help stimulate new skin growth.   In addition, honey is a natural topical antibiotic and will help damaged skin stay free of infection.

Headaches – Consuming two teaspoons of honey is known to help alleviate migraines and headaches for some people.  This is because honey contains potassium and magnesium, which can increase blood flow to the brain.

Bedwetting – If your child is a bedwetter, try feeding him/her one teaspoon of honey before bed.  This remedy has been used for centuries, and some parents swear by it!

Energy – Honey is known by many as “nature's energy food” because it contains simple sugars or carbohydrates (monosaccharides).  With 17 grams of carbohydrates per tablespoon, honey provides your body with the perfect amount of energy to get you through a tough workout.

Facial Cleanser – Honey naturally regulates the pH of your skin,  is high in nutrients, and is a natural moisturizer.  Washing your skin with honey has been shown to significantly reduce the damage caused by severe acne. Use slightly crystallized honey for a nice exfoliating effect.

Insomnia- Mixing a teaspoon of honey into a glass of water or herbal tea can help minimize the sleeplessness associated with insomnia. This natural remedy works because honey contains the amino acid Tryptophan, which induces sleep. Eating honey initiates the production of serotonin which is eventually metabolized into the sleep chemical melatonin.

Inflammation- A spoonful of honey has been shown to reduce inflammation. This is particularly true if you have a sore throat. Inflammation is a very common source of joint pain and muscle soreness.

Arthritis- A common way to help with arthritis is to combine 1-3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, a glass of water, and a teaspoon of honey. Some studies show that this potent combination will help reduce the inflammation that contributes to the pain of arthritis.

We recommend stocking up on the very best honey available, Savannah Bee honey.
