Dry lips affect people across the country, through all the seasons. Everything from excessively dry weather, to hot foods, to licking your lips too frequently can cause them to lose moisture, dry out, and become chapped. Luckily, there is an all-natural solution in the form of our Beeswax Lip Balm that banishes dry lips. The secret is in the ingredients!
What Is Beeswax?
Beeswax itself is a miraculous blend of many different organic ingredients, including acids, alkanes, esters, and a whole variety of other lipids. In essence, it is a wax that is solid at room temperature, which bees use to create honeycombs within their hives. The honeycombs, which are made of this wax, can then be used as storage for honey that the bees use as food, as well as for cells to house the larvae of the colony as they mature.
The wax itself is produced by glands along the abdomen of worker bees, secreted and then formed into the honeycomb that the colony uses. Over the centuries, humans have used beeswax for everything from leather treatment to making candles for illumination and even in medicine.
Speaking of medicine, beeswax is a remarkable compound that can be used to great effect in a wide variety of health and wellness products, such as our Beeswax Lip Balm!
How Beeswax Lip Balm Works
Beeswax itself has a number of remarkable characteristics that make it uniquely suitable for inclusion in a lip balm blend. One of the interesting things about beeswax is that the wax blend itself is a humectant, which both attracts and retains moisture. By applying a beeswax mixture to sensitive areas such as chapped lips, you can help them rehydrate.
Beeswax also contains a unique mix of oils and fats, which, as you might know, are hydrophobic. This means that they cannot be dissolved in water, but in this particular instance, it means that it is very difficult, nearly impossible, for water to pass through a beeswax barrier. By applying beeswax in lip balm to dry lips, you are helping to seal in moisture and prevent moisture loss.
While these traits are, on their own, impressive enough, the beeswax in our Beeswax Lip Balm does not work alone. Our lip balm blends are paired up with a variety of other beneficial, natural ingredients that work wonders for dry, chapped lips!
Other Super Ingredients
In addition to the beeswax in our lip balm blends, they also contain shea butter along with olive, sunflower, and other nourishing oils.
Shea butter, a mixture of fatty acids produced from the Butyrospermum parkii tree, is a remarkable ingredient that has been widely used in skincare products around the world for many years. Shea butter itself is readily absorbed by the skin where it mimics the action of the skin’s natural sebum. This enables shea butter, like beeswax, to lock in moisture and protect the skin from dehydration. Shea butter may also be able to improve skin barrier function and elasticity as well, resulting in firmer, younger feeling skin.
Sunflower oil, for its part, is non-comedogenic, which means that it will not clog pores and can help clear the skin's complexion, even as it restores moistures and soothes irritation. Because it is so gentle, it can be widely used on a variety of skin types, including those that are sensitive or prone to acne or other problems associated with over-moisturizing.
Olive oil has also been used on the skin well back into antiquity. Its ability to nourish skin and restore moisture has been well known for a long time, but it’s only recently that we’ve discovered that olive oil actually contains antioxidants that may be able to reduce aging and can keep your skin glowing and younger looking for longer!
